Hebrew Tantra: Marc Gafni

September 15, 2008

Hebrew Tantra:

If we stop to think even for a short moment, we realize that sex really is the great mystery of our lives.

Two groups however suggest very different approaches to sex. One powerful group of forces is arrayed in culture to prevent us from getting it. They tell us that sex is somehow wrong, immoral or sinful. Even when we think we have gotten free of them they pop up again somewhere inside of us wagging their fingers disapprovingly. And of course they remind us constantly of all the trouble sex has gotten the world into – from the Trojan war to the Clinton/Lewinsky drama. Not to mention all the trouble we ourselves have gotten into – emotional, psychological, personal, professional and physical…all because of sex. If you like spiritual exercises in books – and you are up for some slightly cruel fun at your own expense – take a few minutes and just list all the times sex got you into trouble in any or all of the above areas.

Religion wants to affirm love and passion as virtues but divorce them entirely from sex. So moralist religion works hard to erect boundaries that will protect us from the pitfalls of sex. And yet while we acknowledge that sex certainly requires a dimension of discipline, most of us believe that the moralists are wrong and that sex is ultimately – and overwhelmingly – good. Which brings us to the second powerful coalition of forces talking about sex. This group tells us ‘Sex is wonderful – if liberated, the panacea of all ill, if repressed the source of all evil.’ Freudians in disguise, along with many other schools of modern psychology, sexual revolutionaries and a host of other intelligent folk are working hard to strip sex of its undertones. They want to liberate sex from love, Eros and their myriad complexities.
