Two Lines on Freud and Sexuality: Marc Gafni

September 16, 2008

The first coalition which talks about sex is the moralist group which we discussed yesterday briefly. The second powerful coalition of forces talking about sex tells us ‘Sex is wonderful – if liberated, the panacea of all ill, if repressed the source of all evil.’ Freudians in disguise, along with many other schools of modern psychology, sexual revolutionaries and a host of other intelligent folk are working hard to strip sex of its undertones. They want to liberate sex from love, Eros and their myriad complexities.

Indeed, Freud himself was the most influential modern cheerleader at this party. Rooted in a hydraulic model of the psyche, which slightly confuses human beings and steam engines, he taught us that if we would just find a way to release sexual tension in a balanced way, we would be healthy and happy. And yet those who achieved this vaunted balance were shocked to find that the same feelings of alienation, depression and emptiness still plagued them. Okay – hydraulic equilibrium achieved – now what?
