Healing the Split
The Shechina is exiled whenever sex and eros are split. Jake, age 37, works as a claims adjuster in an insurance firm. Often he works well into the night. He feels oppressed by the routine and drabness of his work. On days when he comes home feeling particularly empty he flips on a pornography movie. His work is not erotic, so he looks for his erotic charge in sex. The devastating truth is that even erotic sex in the context of a powerful and committed relationship would not fulfill him.
Nothing can substitute for his very real need for eros at work. Certainly most forms of pornography, which are essentially de-eroticized sex, cannot fill his erotic needs. So he winds up with a hangover – the kind you get from getting drunk on cheap wine. And work the next morning feels all that much more dead and depressing. The Shechina is in exile.
