Many people have asked about my future intentions.
Some have asked about my credentials.
Others have asked deeper questions.

Here is a gentle response.

I am
Ordained Rabbi
Spiritual Teacher
Oxford University Doctor of Philosophy
Spiritual Artist
Social Activist.

All of those mean exactly

Just as I AM.

As R. Kuk writes in his passage in his wonderful work, The Lights of Holiness, (3:140)
โ€œI amโ€•the Lord Your God.โ€

I participate in divinity. As do you.

Weโ€•togetherโ€•are the language of God.

We are Godโ€™s Verbs.
We are Godโ€™s Adjectives.
We are Godโ€™s Nouns.
We are even Godโ€™s Dangling Modifiers!

If my teaching is real and authentic,
if it helps people to heal and transform,
if it afflicts the comfortable and comforts the afflicted,
then it is fulfilling its function,
whatever you want to call it or me.

If it does not do so,
then it is not teachingโ€•
whatever honorific titles
are attached to my name.

My own inner sense is that I want to unfold in the world,
not necessarily as a Rabbi or Scholar or even Spiritual teacherโ€ฆ
but as

Spiritual Artist
Social Entrepreneur.

I can only promise you one thing.

My heart, soul, and mind are committed to alleviating suffering in every way I know how.
Until the day I draw my dying breath.

If you think I have had too many lovers in unconventional contexts to be a rabbi or spiritual teacher, then you can study with me as a Spiritual Artist.

Or you may feel that I have made mistakes in my evolution, and therefore cannot be a spiritual teacher or Rabbi; if that is what you feel, then you may well want to study with someone you feel has lived a less unconventional and less complex life. Go for it!

And if you feel that you are in a position to make that kind of judgment, you may want to look into that. Most of what is true lies hidden from the eye. I suggest that if your spirit brings you here you’ll be in touch, and we can talk directly before determining your direction.

There are many teachers and many artists.

Certainly you may want to seek a teacher whom you feel can fill your expectations better than I. Beautiful! Go for it! Total Good!

I have not lived a conventional โ€œwhite picket fenceโ€ life even though in one part of my thinking that is very much what I believe in; other parts of my mind and soul believe that we need to live the story that life invites us to liveโ€•and, for whatever reason, I was not invited to live a conventional โ€œwhite picket fenceโ€ life.

For better or for worse, very similar mistakes have been made by many of the wonderful teachers with whom you may be studying.

In my view, my mistakes are the source of my greatest wisdom. I have done Teshuva, inner spiritual work of transformation and personal evolution, for my mistakes in the best way possible, guided by a wonderful group of spiritual friends, teachers, and students. I hope you, dear reader, have done Teshuva as well, for any and all of your mistakes, and in the best way possible.

Sometimes contexts are created which prevent our asking forgiveness from those whom we have hurt. Someone may have died, or someone may have acted in ways that brought systems into play that prevented direct and authentic communication. When that has been the case in my life, I have asked forgiveness internally and with the witness of community and friends. You should do the same.

In my tradition, every significant figure from Moses to David to the modern great teachers must do Teshuva. Similarly, the great political leaders whom I loved while growing up, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Gandhi, were required to do Teshuva for their areas of shortcoming. One cannot enter into the depth of oneโ€™s personal evolution other than through the gates of oneโ€™s own personal failure. The door to realizing oneโ€™s Soul Print or Unique Self is through the gates of oneโ€™s particular area of vulnerability, pain, and weakness.

In my view I am fully worthy to be a teacher. That view has been confirmed by my spiritual friends and teachers at this stage of my life. I will spare you the knee-jerk humility that suggests otherwise.

If you do not feel that this is the case: Total Good. You should not study with me. Find someone who opens your heart and your mind, who loves and cares about you, and who invites you to the next stage of your evolution even as she or he demands that you participate in the evolution of all of reality.

If you do study with me, or allow me to share my spiritual art forms with you, I may challenge every belief you have about reality and about yourself. I may reflect back to you your own biggest fear and darkest shadow. But that is not all. I will also reflect back to you your most gorgeous and breathtaking beauty. Your stunning shimmering uniqueness.

I will try to not only challenge you, but to love you. And to share with you my own core certainty of beingโ€•my own love and divine communion. On a good day.

Moment to moment, I will listen into what is necessary and respond accordingly. With the help of God and good friends.

With love,

Marc Gafni
